The Miami Marlins have a late pitching plan and a bruised ninth-inning map. The Boston Red Sox have spent this run turning patient at-bats and role-player traffic into late pressure.
Marlins hand Phillips a tricky return to the rotation
Tyler Phillips is now listed by mlb.com to start after Miami was initially shown as TBD. He is rested, but his previous appearance came in relief, leaving more uncertainty than usual around his leash.
Phillips works more as a multi-pitch contact manager than an overpowering arm. He needs early-count grounders and soft contact against a Red Sox order that can stack left-handed and switch-hitting options throughout the lineup.
The larger problem waits behind him. Pete Fairbanks left Monday's game with recurring nerve irritation and said, as reported by mlb.com, “This one I felt it more throughout the whole arm.”
Fairbanks should be considered unavailable pending evaluation, and the Marlins have not named an interim closer. Anthony Bender is also unavailable, while Tyler Zuber, Josh Ekness, Calvin Faucher and Michael Petersen offer possibilities without supplying a settled hierarchy.
Kyle Stowers returned Monday from a hamstring strain, reached twice and restored some thump to the lineup. The Marlins still failed to cash repeated scoring chances, then lost both a late lead and their closer in the same sour ninth inning.
Red Sox bring patience, handedness and a fresh look
Payton Tolle is listed to start for Boston on normal rest. The power left-hander has shown premium fastball velocity in August, but his more useful development has been the ability to work deep when hitters put the ball in play rather than simply chasing strikeouts.
Miami has not faced Tolle in the majors, giving the Marlins an adjustment to make on the first trip through the order. His expected length also matters because Boston's late-inning group carries considerable mileage.
The Red Sox can attack Phillips with Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran, Nick Sogard, Adley Rutschman, Anthony Seigler and Mickey Gasper among their left-handed or switch-hitting choices. That shape encourages deep counts and makes Phillips work across the plate instead of living comfortably on one edge.
Boston's lower order supplied the decisive work Monday, with Seigler delivering the winning hit after several earlier chances went begging. The pattern has been stubborn rather than elegant: keep building traffic until the opposing bullpen runs out of clean exits.
There are absences in the supporting cast, including Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa on rehab work and Masataka Yoshida with a significant hamstring strain. Boston's own bullpen is also short-handed, with mlb.com listing Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten on the injured list, while Aroldis Chapman has pitched on consecutive days.
A closed roof rewards line drives, not wishful thinking
loanDepot park will have its roof closed, taking the exterior wind and possible thunderstorms out of the hitting equation. The park suppresses power, particularly toward the deep central gaps, so marginal fly balls should not receive much help.
That does not remove Boston's scoring routes. Duran and Eli White can take extra bases, while walks, gap contact and Miami's uncertain relief roles can create runs without a parade of home runs.
This is the second game of the series, with first pitch set for 6:40 PM ET. Boston is pushing for an American League wild-card spot, while Miami remains outside the final National League wild-card position with little room to waste games at home.
Make Phillips earn every out, then test the bullpen map
The clean angle is Boston's team total rather than the game winner. Phillips' move from relief into a late-confirmed start creates workload uncertainty, and a patient, left-handed-heavy order is well equipped to shorten his night.
An early hook would force Miami to cover too many outs without Fairbanks and without a defined closer. Four Boston runs can come from walks, singles, aggressive baserunning and one ball into a gap; no roof-assisted souvenir is required.
Backing the Red Sox moneyline would also require trusting their depleted late-inning group to protect a lead. Isolating Boston's offense avoids that unnecessary layer and targets the more vulnerable side of the matchup.
The restraint is the ballpark and Phillips' ability to generate quick contact when his command is sharp. Boston is also missing several established bats, so long at-bats must become actual baserunners rather than merely a handsome pitch count.
