One rising, one fluctuating
Fernandez arrived in New York after her cleanest performance of the summer, a 6-3 6-2 win over Shuai Zhang in which she read the serve better as the match went on and survived several attacks on her own second delivery. The same hard-court swing also produced a loss to Xiyu Wang from a set up and a collapse from 5-1 ahead against Alexandra Eala in Washington.
Sawangkaew has been playing almost continuously. She beat Panna Udvardy 6-4 6-3 here, came from a set down to see off Sloane Stephens 4-6 6-2 6-2 in Philadelphia, and even in defeat stayed in contact, losing to Anna Blinkova by two games after taking the opening set 6-1. Her serve is the fragile part: the Volynets loss turned into a run of breaks.
Why the margin is the soft spot
Fernandez should win, and her left-handed return position will punish Sawangkaew's weaker service games. Covering a four-and-a-half game line, though, requires the authoritative version she has produced only in bursts since Toronto, against an opponent she has never seen and who keeps extending matches once they get messy.
Any three-setter, any tiebreak set, any 6-4 or 7-5 pattern keeps this ticket alive. Only Fernandez at her most controlled breaks it.
