Sara Bejlek and Cristina Bucsa open their US Open campaigns on Monday at 15:00 UTC, on the outdoor hard courts. Bejlek is the higher-ranked player at 29 and, on current evidence, the better one. The question is less who wins than how long it takes.
Two very different kinds of recent evidence
Bejlek's Cincinnati week was not a soft draw. She beat Sabalenka 7-6(7) 6-4 and got past Keys 3-6 6-4 7-6(5) after trailing by a set and a break, and both wins came the same way: long rallies, lofted forehands, drop shots and a refusal to concede anything cheaply. The 4-6 1-6 loss to Gauff showed what happens when an opponent absorbs all of that without overpressing.
Bucsa is rebuilding after roughly two months away with a right wrist problem, and her level moves match to match. She handled Bondar 6-4 6-3 in Monterrey with the first serve working, then lost to Vidmanova 4-6 5-7 with it gone. She also arrives from Mexico mid-week, which trims her adaptation time rather than her ability to hold serve in stretches.
Where the twentieth game comes from
Bejlek wins by accumulation, not by demolition. She takes few free points behind her own delivery, so her service games run long, and she has needed half a set to settle before — Swiatek was well clear in Toronto before Bejlek made that match difficult.
The Under needs a clinical straight-sets job that is not really her signature. A 6-4 6-4 or 7-5 6-3 clears the line, any deciding set clears it easily, and Bucsa's doubles instincts mean she is not easily hurried at the net.
